Independent Smallholders
Independent smallholders are growers who manage oil palm plots of up to 50 hectares (or as defined in national interpretations). They make autonomous decisions about land use, production, and financing. To achieve RSPO certification, they must join a group, sign the Smallholder Declaration, and progressively meet sustainability requirements under the RSPO Independent Smallholder (ISH) Standard.

Scheme Smallholders
Scheme smallholders operate under formal agreements with a mill or plantation company, often receiving inputs, training, and financial support. They are included as part of the company’s Unit of Certification under the RSPO Principles & Criteria (P&C), and are assessed collectively during audits to ensure compliance.

Independent Auditors
RSPO-accredited auditors play a vital role in maintaining the credibility of the system. They conduct independent, third-party evaluations to verify that growers and group managers comply with RSPO standards. Auditors use defined indicators, detect gaps, and ensure continuous improvement.

Independent Supply Chain Actors
These include processors, manufacturers, traders, and retailers who handle RSPO-certified palm oil beyond the plantation and mill. They are certified under the RSPO Supply Chain Certification Standard, which ensures traceability and integrity of claims throughout the supply chain. Their compliance helps maintain consumer trust and drives market demand for sustainable palm oil.
